Ohio ranks 35th in the
nation of geographic size, however, it has the 10th largest highway system. It has the fifth highest volume of traffic, the fifth
highest volume of truck traffic, the fourth largest interstate network, and it has the second largest
inventory of bridges. Local government entities share concerns about the current status of road and bridge needs. County Engineers share concerns about the 26,848 bridges they maintain, which is 64% of all the bridges in the state. More than 11,000 county bridges are over 50 years old. The Motor Fuel Tax Task Force was created by the legislature in HB 94 to “study the adequacy and distribution of the motor fuel tax”. On December 2nd, 2002, the task force is to issue a report of its findings to the General Assembly and Governor. Members of the task force include six from the state of Budget and Management, two from the general public, and eight representing various organizations and associations including the CCAO, CEAO, Ohio Municipal League, OTA, Ohio Public Expenditure Council, State Highway Patrol Trooper’s Collective Bargaining Unit, OCA, and Ohio Petroleum Council.
