------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Item 154:
Minimum Horizontal Clearance on Bridge Non-Cardinal
Minimum Horizontal Clearance on Bridge Cardinal

Where a structure carries a route or a railroad on the
bridge this item refers to the bridge roadway clearance.
Code the available clearance measured normal to the
centerline of roadway between restrictive features such
as curbs, railings, sidewalks, wheel guards, raised
medians and other structural features limiting the roadway
surface. (Raised Button-Type medians and small raised lane
channeling curbs, etc. are not considered restrictions.)

If more than one roadway or opening exists, a measurement
should be made for each, but only the clearances for the
two main openings (usually the mainline opposing directions
of travel) shall be coded. The term "Cardinal" in the item
heading refers to the "Primary" direction of the route
(direction in which the route is officially measured for a
particular agency's records).

If only a single roadway or single opening is involved the
clearance figure shall be coded in the space for the "Cardinal"
opening and all zeros coded under "Non-Cardinal" opening.

For culvert type structures which appear on the route as a
bridge but actually have no deck, the coded clearances should
show the full width of the pavement plus shoulders except
where this dimension is limited by guardrail, culvert endwalls,
etc. All clearances are to be coded to the nearest tenth of a foot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Item 155:

Practical Maximum Vertical On Bridge

The information to be coded for this item is the
maximum vertical clearance on the bridge. It is to
be coded as a four (4) digit numeric in feet and
inches. The minimum clearance for a ten (10) foot
width of pavement or traveled part of the roadway
(shoulders paved or unpaved and median areas not
included) where the clearance is the greatest should
be coded. For structures having multiple openings,
clearances for each mainline opening should be measured
and recorded elsewhere but only the maximum of these
clearances should be coded. When no restrictions exist
code "9999".

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Item 156:

Minimum Horizontal Under Clearance Non-Cardinal
Minimum Horizontal Under Clearance Cardinal

For a structure that has a route or railroad under
the bridge, the item refers to the available opening
clearances. Code the clear distance measured normal
to the centerline of roadway between the most
restrictive features such as walls, piers, abutments,
toe of slope, etc. which restrict horizontally the
total vehicular passageway. (Limited height roadway
items such as curbs, guardrails, etc. are not considered
to restrict the total opening.)

If more than one roadway or opening exists, a measurement
should be made for each, but only the clearances for the
two main openings (usually the mainline opposing directions
of travel) shall be coded. The term "Cardinal" in the
item heading refers to the "Primary" direction of the
route (direction in which the route is officially measured
for a particular agency's records).

If only a single roadway or single opening is involved
the clearance figure shall be coded in the space for the
"Cardinal" opening and all zeros coded under "Non-Cardinal"
opening.

For culvert type structures which appear on the route as a
bridge but actually have no deck, the coded clearances
should show the full width of the pavement plus shoulders
except where this dimension is limited by guardrail, culvert
endwalls, etc. All clearances are to be coded to the nearest
tenth of a foot.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Item 157:

Practical Maximum Vertical Under Bridge

The information to be coded for this item is the
maximum vertical clearance under the bridge. It
is to be coded as a four (4) digit numeric in feet
and inches. The minimum clearance for a ten (10)
foot width of pavement or traveled part of the roadway
(shoulders paved or unpaved and median areas not included)
where the clearance is the greatest should be coded.
For structures having multiple openings, clearances for
each mainline opening should be measured and recorded
elsewhere but only the maximum of these clearances should
be coded.

Item 97 -

Due to a change in the State law and upon a request from the ODOT Office

of Structural Engineering last week, the name of ODOT Inventory Item #96,

"Maintenance Responsibility" will be changed to "Maintenance

Responsibility (Major)." The Maintenance Responsibility (Major) Item will

stay as the Inventory Item # 96. A new Inventory "Item # 97, Routine

Maintenance" will be added in the BMS.
